DEMENTIA FRIENDLY WALKS

Walks designed for those living with Dementia and their loved ones will begin at Victoria Park in Ilkeston this month. The walks, organised by Erewash Borough Council’s Sport and Health Development team, are an ideal opportunity for individuals with Dementia to spend quality time with their loved ones and enjoy the benefits of light outdoor exercise.

The Dementia friendly walks take place on Wednesday 17th August, Wednesday 31st August and Wednesday 14th September. Residents should meet at the entrance gates of Victoria Park, Ilkeston at 1pm. It is estimated to be a 30 minute stroll, however walkers can take as long as they need.  Participants can go at their own pace and will be led by qualified walk leaders. The walks are short, accessible and wheelchair-friendly. Refreshments will be available afterwards.

After the above dates, the Dementia friendly walks will alternate to West Park, Long Eaton, to allow everybody in the borough the opportunity to attend. Information on upcoming walks will be added to the Facebook page facebook.com/activeerewash as updates are ongoing. Councillor Paul Maginnis, Lead member for Health and Wellbeing at Erewash Borough Council, says:

“Dementia friendly walks are a fantastic idea! All members of the community deserve the opportunity for exercise, spending time outdoors and with loved ones. These walks will allow those in Erewash with Dementia to enjoy peaceful strolls tailor-made to them and essential quality time with family, friends and carers.”
