The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Sue Beardsley, will
serve an extended term in the role until May 2021 due to the continuing
challenges and uncertainty over the coronavirus lockdown. Erewash Borough
Council was due to hold its Annual General Meeting and Mayor-making ceremony on
Thursday 14th May but this will not now take place – it has been cancelled
under regulations introduced earlier this month that removed the requirement
for local authorities to hold annual meetings. The move means Councillor
Beardsley will continue in the civic role for a further 12 months while
Councillor Donna Briggs will continue as the Deputy Mayor until May next year.
Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council,
says: “To see a Mayor serve for two
consecutive years is probably a first for many councils that have made the same
decision, but these are exceptional times. The last couple of months of this
term has seen events cancelled due to coronavirus and the start of the new term
is also adversely affected. So this decision means Councillor Beardsley can
continue with her duties for another year and Councillor Briggs can look
forward to mayor-making next year and, if elected, enjoy a full year in the
role.”
